UW-Madison West Campus Cogeneration Facility
$180 Million construction of a new, natural gas-fired power plant on the UW-Madison West Campus.that provides 150 megawatts of electricity to MGE customers and steam heat and chilled-water air-conditioning to the university. Through the efficiencies of cogeneration and state-of-the-art emissions controls, it is one of the cleanest power plants in the Midwest. (Website)
Project Description:
Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), the Wisconsin Department of Administration and the UW-Madison has proposed building the $180 million West Campus Cogeneration Facility (WCCF) on the UW-Madison campus. The WCCF is a new steam, chilled water and electric plant to be constructed on a proposed 4.5-acre site located immediately north of the existing UW-Madison Walnut Street heating and cooling plant. It is designed to produce chilled water and steam for the UW-Madison campus and generate electricity for the Madison community. Using world-class technologies, the 150-megawatt WCCF will be among the cleanest, most efficient energy production facilities in the United States.
The WCCF will have an 80,500 square foot footprint and vary in height from 20’ to 115’. It will be constructed with a precast concrete exterior.
If approved, construction of the WCCF is scheduled to begin October 2003. It is planned for completion by September 2005 with some portions of the facility to be commissioned in winter of 2004.
